## **Core Concepts**

### **Stablecoin**

A digital token pegged to a fiat currency (typically 1:1 with USD). USDC, for example, is backed by cash and US Treasury securities, designed to always trade at $1.00\. Unlike Bitcoin, stablecoins don’t appreciate—they move value predictably across borders at internet speed.

### **USDC (USD Coin)**

The most widely used dollar-backed stablecoin, issued by Circle. As of Q3 2025, $73.7 billion USDC is in circulation, each backed 1:1 by reserves with monthly third-party attestation.

### **XSGD / XUSD**

Regional stablecoins issued by StraitsX. XSGD is pegged to the Singapore Dollar (\~$13.8M market cap). XUSD is pegged to the US Dollar (\~$44.9M market cap). Both operate on multiple blockchains and hold MAS regulatory approval.

### **Blockchain / Distributed Ledger**

A shared, immutable digital record of transactions maintained across multiple computers. Enables 24/7 settlement, instant verification, and transparent audit trails without a central authority.

### **Layer 1 (L1) Blockchain**

The base blockchain network that processes and finalizes transactions independently. Examples: Ethereum, Solana, Circle’s Arc, Stripe’s Tempo. The foundation layer where settlements happen.

### **Smart Contract**

Self-executing code that automatically enforces agreements when conditions are met. Example: “If payment received, release shipment notification.” No intermediary needed.

---

## **Payment Mechanics**

### **On-Ramp**

Converting fiat currency (SGD, USD, THB) into stablecoins. The entry gate into blockchain-based payments, typically handled by regulated partners. Fees usually run 0.5-1%.

### **Off-Ramp**

Converting stablecoins back to fiat for deposit into traditional bank accounts. The exit gate from blockchain to conventional banking.

### **Atomic Settlement / Finality**

A transaction that either completes fully and irreversibly, or fails entirely—no “pending” state. Either everything happens or nothing happens! Once confirmed, the transfer is legally and technically complete. No chargebacks, no reversals.

### **Transaction Fee / Gas Fee**

The cost to process a blockchain transaction. On payment-optimized chains like Arc and Tempo, fees are paid in stablecoins (not volatile tokens) and typically run $0.01-0.10 per payment.

### **Deterministic Finality**

Guaranteed permanent settlement once confirmed—zero chance of reversal. “Confirmed” means “done.” Critical for knowing exactly when funds are available. Arc achieves this in \~0.5 seconds.

### **Cross-Chain Transfer**

Moving stablecoins between blockchains (e.g., USDC from Ethereum to Solana). Circle’s Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) handles this by burning tokens on the origin chain and minting them on the destination chain.

### **Burn and Mint**

The mechanism CCTP uses for cross-chain transfers. Tokens are destroyed on the origin chain and created on the destination chain. Maintains 1:1 reserve backing across all blockchains.

## **Infrastructure Components**

### **Correspondent Banking**

The traditional system where banks use intermediary banks to move money internationally. Each correspondent takes a fee ($15-30) and adds delay (24-48 hours). The “soggy middle” that stablecoins eliminate.

### **Orchestration Platform / Middleware**

Software that routes payments across multiple stablecoin networks, on/off-ramps, and compliance systems. Examples: Xweave (ASEAN-focused), Cybrid (North America-focused). They coordinate which rails to use and handle compliance checks.

### **VASP (Virtual Asset Service Provider)**

A regulated entity licensed to handle cryptocurrency/stablecoin transactions. The blockchain equivalent of a licensed money transmitter. StraitsX and Coinbase are VASPs.

### **MPI (Major Payment Institution) License**

Singapore’s MAS licensing for payment providers handling large volumes. Signals regulatory approval for significant payment operations. StraitsX holds four MPI licenses.

### **Reserves / Reserve Attestation**

The fiat currency and assets backing a stablecoin. USDC holds $1+ in reserves for every $1 USDC in circulation. Monthly attestation reports are independent audits confirming this backing.

### **CPN (Circle Payments Network)**

Circle’s institutional payment network connecting financial institutions for real-time cross-border settlement using USDC and EURC. Launched May 2025\. As of Q3 2025: 29 institutions enrolled, $3.4B annualized volume.

### **CCTP (Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol)**

Circle’s protocol enabling permissionless USDC transfers between blockchains via burn-and-mint mechanics. V2 launched March 2025\. As of December 2025: $126B cumulative volume, 5.3M+ transfers across 19 blockchains.

## **Financial Metrics**

### **Circulation / Market Cap**

Total value of a stablecoin currently issued and in use. USDC circulation: $73.7 billion (Q3 2025). Higher circulation generally means deeper liquidity.

### **On-Chain Transaction Volume**

Total value of transactions processed on a blockchain. USDC processed $9.6 trillion in Q3 2025\. High volume indicates active usage and battle-tested infrastructure.

### **Reserve Income**

Interest earned on the assets backing a stablecoin. Circle earns this on USDC reserves—96% of their Q3 2025 revenue ($740M) came from reserve income at a 4.15% return rate.

### **FX Markup / Spread**

The difference between the true mid-market exchange rate and the rate offered. Often hidden in the exchange rate rather than shown as a separate fee. Traditional banks: 1-2%. Stablecoin rails: 0.5-1%.

### **All-In Cost**

Total payment cost including all fees: sending, intermediary, receiving, FX markups, and transaction fees. The only number that matters when comparing payment methods. Traditional banking: 1.5-3.5%. Stablecoin rails: 0.5-2%.

## **Technical Terms**

### **EVM-Compatible (Ethereum Virtual Machine)**

A blockchain that can run smart contracts written for Ethereum. Arc and Tempo are EVM-compatible, meaning developers can use existing Ethereum tools and contracts without rewriting code.

### **TPS (Transactions Per Second)**

Blockchain throughput measure. Tempo targets 100,000+ TPS (currently benchmarking 20,000 TPS on testnet). Higher TPS means the network handles peak volumes without congestion.

### **ISO 20022**

Global standard for financial messaging used by banks (invoice numbers, customer IDs, accounting codes). SWIFT adopted it in 2022\. Tempo’s TIP-20 standard is compatible, enabling automated payment reconciliation.

### **TIP-20 Token Standard**

Tempo’s extension of ERC-20 with payment primitives including `transferWithMemo` (a 32-byte memo field compatible with ISO 20022). Enables real-time reconciliation—ERPs can auto-match payments to invoices in milliseconds.

### **Testnet vs Mainnet**

**Testnet:** Sandbox for testing. Arc and Tempo are in public testnet (Feb 2026). Features are experimental—don’t build critical operations around them.
**Mainnet:** Production environment where real value moves. USDC on Ethereum mainnet has $73B+ backing. Arc and Tempo mainnet launches expected 2026.

### **Arc**

Circle’s Layer 1 blockchain purpose-built for institutional stablecoin finance. Public testnet launched October 28, 2025\. Key features: deterministic sub-second finality, USDC as native gas token, EVM-compatible. Over 100 launch participants including BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, Visa.

### **Tempo**

Stripe and Paradigm’s Layer 1 blockchain optimized for global commerce. Public testnet launched December 9, 2025\. Raised $500M Series A at $5B valuation. Key features: 100,000+ TPS target, TIP-20 standard for payment metadata, dedicated payment lanes, no native gas token (pay fees in stablecoins).

### **StableFX**

Circle’s institutional-grade stablecoin FX engine (currently on testnet). Combines Request-for-Quote execution with 24/7 on-chain settlement on Arc. Enables institutions to receive quotes from multiple liquidity providers and settle automatically.

## **Regulatory & Compliance**

### **SCS Framework (Single Currency Stablecoin)**

Singapore’s MAS regulatory framework for stablecoins (finalized August 15, 2023). Requires 1:1 reserve backing, monthly attestation, redemption within 5 days. Full implementation expected mid-2026\. StraitsX’s XSGD and XUSD have in-principle approval.

### **KYC/AML (Know Your Customer / Anti-Money Laundering)**

Compliance processes to verify identity and monitor for illicit activity. Required for all regulated financial services, including stablecoin on/off-ramps.

### **MSB (Money Services Business)**

US/Canadian regulatory designation for money transmitters. Requires registration with FinCEN (US) or FINTRAC (Canada). Cybrid holds MSB registration, meaning their clients can operate in these jurisdictions without their own license.
